National Final Cross Country
The Cross Country squad enjoyed a superb day at the National Cup Final in Suffolk on Saturday. Returning to Woodbridge School, where we last won the Junior competition in 2018, it was an emotional experience for three of those same boys who competed here again for their last Cup campaign as Seniors.
On a bitterly cold day, the Juniors kicked off proceedings in style with their best team performance of the season, well-rewarded with bronze medals. Luca led the team well in 17th, despite suffering illness in the week, and he was well-backed up by Patrick with his best-ever run in 27th. Jamie (33rd) held on well despite the 'frostbite' and Sean delivered a mature run on only his third race for the School to close the scorers in 36th. Theo (71st) enjoyed his first race at this level to place while Victor , the only Y7 in the team, was right up there at half distance, pushing on his team-mates, but just faded near the end to 85th in a 160-strong field.
The Inters went into the race as strong favourites but had to deliver the goods. This was never in doubt as the team never looked like being challenged, starting well and moving through the field to secure our third title in this age group in seven years. James ran an assured race to lead the team in seventh. Peter (16th) defied a late foot injury and was closely followed by the fast-finishing Will (20th) and Charlie (21st). Arthur had a very solid run in 57th and Harry closed the team.
The senior boys ran in what proved to be the last of six Schools Cup finals for some of the athletes. In an incredibly tight team race, Judd narrowly finished second to King Edward School Northumberland with just a few seconds separating the teams. Judd were delighted to beat the Sixth Form college of Farnborough into third place. Tom and Josh brought home the team first, with their best ever cross country runs, finishing 5th and 6th respectively in a very high quality field. Jack tore up the field with a very fast final lap finishing in 17th place. George Hopkins finished the scoring with a 41st place finish. The future looks safe in the hands of the final two athletes with Oliver finishing 56th and Mark 63rd.
The Senior girls had their best ever finish, coming 7th out of 26 teams. Carys ran a superb race to finish 15th followed by Ruby in 54th, Jess 61st , Polly in 71st, Neve 77th and Isla in 96. Jess and Carys are the first Judd girls to compete in two cup finals in a row.
Without doubt this was the most successful schools appearance in the history of the Schools Cup competition. Full results can be found here, click on the Results.
